Barbara McKinney moved to Bloomington in 1977 to major in journalism and
political science. She graduated from IU in 1980. She graduated from the IU
School of Law in 1984, cum laude. Since 1989, she has been the director of
the Bloomington Human Rights Commission and an assistant city attorney.
In this capacity, she investigates complaints of discrimination on the basis
of race, sex, religion, disability, sexual orientation, color, national origin
or ancestry, in employment, housing, public accommodations or education. She
is also the city's Americans with Disabilities Act compliance officer, making
sure the city complies with the ADA, and helping businesses understand their
obligations under the law. She's been a member of several nonprofit boards,
including the South Central Community Action Program board and the Hoosier
Hills Food Bank board. She is currently serving her second term on the Bloomington
Township Board and is chair of that board; she is also the chair of the Chamber
of Commerce's Diversity Team. Her honors include winning the Bloomington GLBT
Coalition Liberty and Justice For All Award in 1998, the IU Campus Life Division
Community Award in 1997, the IU Commission on Multi-Cultural Understanding
Community Award in 1997 and the Chamber of Commerce Nancy Howard Diversity Award
in 2002. She is also the mother of one, Ross, age 10 (saved the best for last!)
